The Engler College of Business is proud of its various forms of communication. In addition to this three-time yearly newsletter, we host ProfSpeak, the faculty blog, as well as BuffSpeak, our podcast. Both continue to rack up impressive numbers of eyeballs and eardrums.
Faculty have been contributing to the blog since Fall 2020, with more than 220 posts available for reading. They are organized by topical area to make it easier to find particular subject matter.
A recent post by Dr. Jonathan Shaffer, Associate Dean of Strategic Initiatives & Pickens Professor of Management, has garnered high readership because of research he and his colleagues recently undertook that explored the effects of cannabis use on career outcomes.
March Madness may have already come and gone, but Dr. Anne-Christine Barthel (Associate Professor of Economics and Decision Management & Hodges Professor of Business) provided readers with a thought-provoking look at the gambler’s fallacy. Also hitting the screen was Dr. Nick Gerlich’s (Hickman Professor of Marketing) look at the evolution of convenience stores.

Dr. Elaina Cantrell Robinson (Clinical Assistant Professor of Marketing and Business Communications) and Dr. Nick Gerlich co-edit the blog. ProfSpeak is published every other week during the school year, and can be found here.
BuffSpeak is wrapping up its third season, and recently reached a milestone episode. Season 3 Episode 10’s “It’s The Economy, Stupid” was the 50th installment. The featured guest was Dr. Eric Hoffman (Associate & Pickens Professor of Economics), who along with podcast Host Dr Gerlich, discussed three of the most pressing–and controversial–subjects of the day: tariffs, interest rates, and inflation. The duo sought to keep the discussion informative, and not opinionated.

Episode #51, released on April 29th, included a guest who graduated from our MBA program in 1993. Anupam Johri, or AJ as he is known, is Managing Director and Senior Portfolio Management Director at Morgan Stanley in Dallas. He and Dr. Gerlich examined the fluctuating stock market, the economy, and investing during these challenging times.
The next episode, released on May 14th, includes a conversation with Chris Pittman, who heads up the local chapter of Panhandle Active Transportation + Health, which advocates for pedestrian and cyclist access and acceptance in Amarillo and Canyon. With May being Bike To Work Month, it is perfectly apropos to broach this subject, as well as promote the overall walkability and bikeability of our communities. The health benefits are a great consequence.
All episodes of BuffSpeak can be found here.
Faculty have also been using ProfSpeak and BuffSpeak in their classes, requiring students to read blogs or listen to podcast episodes, and then answering questions in either homework or exam settings.
